A few days ago, I came back from a trip to Costco with some food items that were not originally on my list. Why? Because I had the opportunity to taste those products.

Food samples are an easy and inexpensive way to give potential customers a chance to taste the food and be more comfortable purchasing it.

Can This Marketing Tactic Be Applied To Other Businesses?

Yes, let’s face it, most of us love to receive something for free. So whether you are selling ice cream or professional services, samples or free trials give your potential customers a chance to experience your products or services. What you give away will depend on your business.

Here are some ideas on how to give it away:

For restaurants and other food retailers, the samples are obvious; give food sampling. Or even give away a “secret recipe” (see video below.)

Retail stores can partner with vendors to offer giveaways to attract customers to their stores. Online stores can offer free shipping or include a surprise free sample with their customers’ order.

Giving away professional services can be a free consultation, video tutorials, blog posts, eBooks or anything that can set you apart as an expert in your field.

Consider donating a percentage of your revenue, products, or your time to a local charity. Not only will you be helping those in need but also building a caring reputation for your business.

Generosity catches people’s attention and generates trust.

 

Does Giving Away Free Stuff Devalue Your Product Or Service?

No, it helps you be visible and stand out from your competition. Don’t give away the house; after all you are in business to make a profit.

 

Will People Take Advantage Of Your Free Offer But Not Purchase Your Product Or Service?

Yes, some will and this is true with any marketing tactics that you will use. Some of the reasons are: they do not like it, are not ready to purchase now, or they may not be your ideal customers.

But, if someone has the opportunity to try your product or service, like it and can afford it … they will purchase it.

 

In Conclusion

Don’t be afraid to give away samples or free trials, it catches people’s attention and gives you a way to get in front of potential customers/clients who did not know anything about your business before.
